On the afternoon, we will tour the city, the church and the museum.
This historic town has a unique and intriguing past, as it was once the world’s largest leper colony, established in the early 20th century by the American government during their occupation of the Philippines.
The island served as an isolated sanctuary for people afflicted with leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease. For many years, Culion was a mandatory quarantine area, and those diagnosed with the disease were sent there to live in exile. Despite the challenging circumstances, the community developed its own infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and churches.
In 2006, the World Health Organization declared Culion leprosy-free, and today, it stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of its people. Visitors can explore the well-preserved colonial architecture, learn about the island’s history at the Culion Museum and Archives, and witness the remarkable transformation of this once-isolated community.
